The good news
Subsidies are available for many of the 6 pillars of electrification, as well as for some home energy efficiency upgrades.
We strongly encourage households to engage with supplier-installers who can clearly explain and who quote all the available subsidies. Please read on below, as we outline the Government support, provide information on local SA providers and offer tips from our own experience.
Government support
1) The Federal government scheme for Small scale renewable Technology Certificates, or STCs, provides discounts for;
Solar PV systems
Hot Water Heat Pumps and Solar Thermal Hot Water
2) The SA government assists households through the Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS), providing subsidies for;
Hot water upgrades, such as a Heat Pump HWS
Space Heating & Cooling upgrades, such as Heat Pump Air Conditioner
participation in VPPs (Virtual Power Plants) with home Batteries
Energy efficient lighting, such as LED downlights, and Energy efficient Appliances including Fridge, Freezer, or Heat Pump Clothes Dryer
See below for a non-exhaustive list of REPS providers and aligned supplier-installers. Remember every South Australian pays for this REPS initiative via their power bill - so this is a great opportunity to get some bang for your buck!
3) Various Local governments offer cash back discounts for electrification and partner with suppliers to offer Bulk buys for solar, batteries and VPPs.
Tips
you should get a significantly higher REPS rebate for electrifying your last gas device, which enables gas to be disconnected from your home
many subsidies, such as the STCs, are designed to decline over time, so the sooner you act the more you are able to save
The not so good news
The SA Government Rebate for purchase of a new Electric Vehicle ($3000 and discounted registration for 3 years) was discontinued January 1st 2024, despite not fulfilling its target.
However, opportunities to purchase more affordable EVs through social initiatives such as The Good Car Co remain. So, why not check them out!
